LISTENING TO LIFE

Carnatic vocal legend Bombay Jayashri is one of India's most sought-after musicians. Her rare versatility, distinctive and inimitable tonal quality can be heard across an extensive repertoire that ranges from devotional to meditative music, poetry, playback singing and popular music. She also composes music for films and ballets. Featuring aneclectic mix of carnatic, hindustani, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and world folk music, Listening to Life presents Jayashri as a vocalist and rasika . Join her as she shares anecdotes and inspiring insights to appreciating music and discover the passion and journey of a rasika. A rasika in carnatic terminology is a connoisseur of sorts, a person who loves, listens and appreciates south Indian classical music. And when one becomes a rasika, one usually stays a rasika for life—building knowledge upon knowledge of music terminology, styles and techniques, or training oneself to pick up the subtle nuances that goes unnoticed to the insensitive ear.Listening to Life is a music journey that traces such a listener. Led by Bombay Jayashri, a self-professed rasika, she explores the shades and colours produced by the seven notes of emotion—of joy, sorrow, happiness—experienced by a rasika throughout his or her music journey through life. Featuring an eclectic mix of folk, carnatic, hindustani thumri, bhajans, film and ghazals, she is joined by a stellar group of Indian classical musicians, who have each taken turns to contribute to the concept of this production.Playing alongside Jayashri are Navin Iyer on woodwinds and flute, Embar Kannan on the electric and acoustic violin, Sai Shravanam on the tabla, Navneet Sundar on the grand piano and harmonium, and J Vaidyanathan on the mridangam.
