PASSION OF THE POETS

Passion is the inexplicable sensation that drives artists to create. In music, it is this heightened state of emotion that sets the best poets, composers and musicians apart; that channels their souls and energy into the most sublime pieces of work.Gushing waves of passion in the form of Indian music await to flood your senses delivered by a rare assembly of a piano, a voice, a flute and a cello. An ensemble of four musicians led by virtuosic duo pianist-composer Anil Srinivasan and carnatic vocalist Sikkil Gurucharan get to the heart of India to capture heights of passion in its purest and most emotive states—through music. Together, they take on the lush languid melodies of classical, the romantic nuances of semi-classical and the light folk harmonies of early Indian film music, weaving a world of sheer musical poetry and beauty.Childhood friends from Chennai, Anil Srinivasan is a trained western classical pianist while Sikkil Gurucharan is a well-known Carnatic vocalist. Since releasing Madhirakshi in 2006 (now a regular fixture at festival circuits), the two have received critical acclaim for their frequent collaborations. Using the classical piano as a frame around the free-flowing classical carnatic voice, they have managed to create a significant following in a very short period of time, winning both contemporary carnatic music lovers and Indian classical purists alike. Their music idiom has been lauded as ahead of their time, one that blends south Indian and western styles as if symbolising a perfect pairing of the two. Joined by celebrated Indian flautist Navin Iyer and local cellist Thomas Marlin, Passion of the Poets explores passion through the beginnings of Indian folk music.
