Head of Strings, Qian Zhou, leads the orchestra with sweet angelic melodies on the violin, portraying Prokofiev’s serene composure in times of political turmoil in Russia. Stravinsky’s 100-year-old masterpiece, The Rite of Spring, cuts through the ethereal atmosphere, its evocation of Spring’s flowering opening out into a programmatic account of a young maiden chosen as a sacrifice for the gods. Eiji Oue, a protégé of Leonard Bernstein, will also conduct Bernstein’s Candide Suite, arranged by Charlie Harmon for Oue in the final years of Bernstein’s life.
