Singapore Art Museum Appreciating Art Lecture Series 2013 Middle East

Middle East The contemporary art scene in the Gulf is relatively new, but is connected to a nuanced history of modern and contemporary art in the greater Arab region. Unlike neighbouring Arab countries where some of the region's most-prolific modern artists emerged, Gulf Cooperation Countries such as Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) saw art production emerge gradually with varying degrees of concentration and sophistication within each country. Examining the key socio-economic, political and cultural influences that have shaped the Arab region’s art historical narratives enables us to better contextualise the Gulf region's surging art market today, particularly in the UAE. About the Speaker Mandy Merzaban is the collections manager and curator for the Barjeel Art Foundation founded by Sharjah-based collector and columnist Sultan Sooud Al-Qassemi. She has curated six exhibitions of works from the Barjeel Collection since the foundation’s inception 2010. Born in Canada, Mandy is a graduate of the Fine Arts programme at the University of British Columbia with a focus in Visual Arts in digital media and painting as well as Cultural Anthropology. Since Barjeel’s inception Mandy has overseen all aspects of the foundation’s development, including graphic design, archiving and logistics.
